Description:
The fund makes investments based on ongoing macroeconomic themes. The goal is to beat the S&P 500 by a +10% margin annually. As of Nov 29th, this margin is +13.30%. The 3Q of 2010 was an incredibly difficult quarter for me investing wise. My entire call on the market was off. I had structured the portfolio to be essentially 0 delta (long exposure + short exposure via ETFs = 0). I had expected the European crisis to erupt but I was clearly wrong on the timing as the S&P roared back with a >10% return YTD. Thankfully, halfway through the entire process I realized I was fighting the trend and shifted the portfolio into a few value ideas I uncovered. At present, the fund does not have any short exposure. Its not because I am very optimistic. The opposite in fact, as the Euro crisis I forecasted to hit in 3Q is starting to hit now in 4Q. However, I have found a number of value proposition which I am very confident about. Its an eclectic group of companies including a Peruvian pension administrator, a Pacific airline, and a German iron ore producer. As for my macro outlook, I am very grim for the coming months. The Irish crisis shows no signs of abetting. While the ECB might put out a few of the flames by creating bailout vehicles, its only a matter of time before the correlations in the credit markets spike to 1 and Portugal/Spain/Greece face pressure again. I also do not like the situation in Asia. From an economic perspective, China looks like its being fueled by artificial demand engineered by the politicos. The Korean situation also does not add to the political stability of the region. As a whole, I am retreating to micro company plays which are geographically and industry wise very diverse. I am keeping some of the cash parked in large cap, div plays which I can get liquidity from to make a macro bet when I think the timing is right. My YTD returns at present is 9%. I would prefer to end 2010 with returns in the double digits. Here's to hoping that happens.
