| HOW
THE MANAGER INVESTS |
| WHAT
IS YOUR INVESTING STRATEGY? (GROWTH, VALUE, TECHNICAL ANALYSIS, ETC.) |
|
answer --> |
Three of my portfolios here are what I consider to be my “serious” portfolios. They relate to how I manage money in real life, and they also make use of strategies in which I have the greatest confidence in success. The other portfolios I use here are experimental in nature and may later become strategies I use more seriously.
When determining a strategy for a portfolio, I first decide where that strategy will fit in terms of holding periods and acceptable risk. Then, I begin to design a theme around that that I believe will capture those characteristics. After I decide on a theme that acts as a sort of hypothesis, I then begin to decide what sorts of criteria will best capture that theme.
For shorter term selections, I generally like to look for momentum, determined by relationships to earnings growth and value as compared to the market at large. In intermediate holdings, I like to look for not only momentum, but also for some less tangible features of things I can understand. For example, I might look for a solid business plan I think will work. For the longer term selections I make, I prefer to stick with the sorts of businesses in which I have the most knowledge. Because I spent 17 years of my life in retail management, I use the knowledge I gained to analyze management, business plans, and operations of retailers.

| HOW
DO YOU SELECT NEW COMPANIES FOR YOUR FUNDS? |
|
answer --> |
I create a set of criteria and stick with it, come rain or shine. I believe in discipline when selecting stocks, maybe making slight tweaks to the criteria, but sticking with the theme overall. I use various methods for what I want accomplish according to different risk/reward profiles. I mostly will use criteria to whittle down selections to those that best fit a certain theme.
|
| HOW
DO YOU DECIDE TO REMOVE A STOCK FROM YOUR FUNDS? |
|
answer --> |
For the most part, I remove a stock when it no longer fits the criteria I have set for a portfolio. If I were looking at it as a new investment and would not accept it, then it probably doesn’t belong in the portfolio. Sometimes, compliance comes into play, and that's when I have to make some sacrifices to bring things into compliance. Those decisions tend to be a little more arbitrary than I would like.
